It comes as a surprise to many people that the world is not all English, not even on the Internet. For instance, Germany, Austria and much of Switzerland speak German first. French is the language of choice in France, much of Switzerland and Belgium, a quarter of Canada and much of Africa. And Spanish is the first language of Mexico, Central America, South America (except Brazil), much of the Caribbean and an increasingly affluent portion of Americans ... and, of course, Spain.
Two other languages similar to French and Spanish are Portuguese and Italian. We can do these for you, too. Both have substantial markets; Italian is Europe's fifth language and Portuguese is the main spoken in language in Brazil.

First we develop a list of search terms or keywords that people might use to find your website. This is not a simple matter of translating your English keywords. People might be using three terms in English, where only one exists in French. Or they might be searching for one main term in English, but searching for several synonyms in German.
What makes multilingual keyword research even trickier is that search sample sizes are so much smaller than in English. In the absence of more precise data, a page often has to be optimized for multiple variants of a word...

The next step is typically link-building, which is also tougher on the non-English Internet. There are fewer websites to exchange links with, fewer directories and almost no article banks. Fortunately, much fewer links will yield results in French or German than would be required for equivalent search terms in English.
